Anthropic Re-engages with Trump Amidst Pentagon Dispute

Navigating Federal Relations: Anthropic and the Trump Administration

Despite a recent designation as a supply-chain risk by the Pentagon, AI company Anthropic is actively engaged in discussions with high-level officials within the Trump administration. This marks a notable development, suggesting a potential recalibration of relationships after earlier tensions.

Indications of a thawing rapport first emerged with reports suggesting that Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell had encouraged major banks to explore Anthropic's advanced 'Mythos' model. Anthropic co-founder Jack Clark characterized the ongoing supply-chain risk dispute with the Pentagon as a "narrow contracting disagreement," emphasizing that it would not diminish the company's willingness to brief the government on its latest AI advancements.

High-Level Meetings and Collaborative Discussions

Further solidifying this trend, Axios reported on Friday that Secretary Bessent and White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles held a meeting with Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei. The White House officially described the encounter as an "introductory meeting" that was "productive and constructive." According to a White House statement, the discussion centered on "opportunities for collaboration, as well as shared approaches and protocols to address the challenges associated with scaling this technology." Anthropic echoed this sentiment in its own statement, confirming that Amodei's meeting with "senior administration officials" involved a "productive discussion on how Anthropic and the U.S. government can work together on key shared priorities such as cybersecurity, America's lead in the AI race, and AI safety." The company expressed its eagerness to "continue these discussions."

The Pentagon Dispute and Broader Administration Views

The friction between Anthropic and the Pentagon reportedly stems from failed negotiations concerning the military's use of Anthropic's AI models. Anthropic sought to implement safeguards to prevent the technology's application in fully autonomous weapons systems and mass domestic surveillance. This stance contrasts with OpenAI, which swiftly announced a military partnership that subsequently drew consumer criticism. The Pentagon's subsequent classification of Anthropic as a supply-chain risk is a serious designation, typically reserved for foreign adversaries, and could significantly restrict the U.S. government's ability to utilize Anthropic's models. The company is currently contesting this designation legally.

However, it appears that other branches of the Trump administration do not share the Department of Defense's adversarial stance. An administration source informed Axios that, with the exception of the Department of Defense, "every agency" is interested in leveraging Anthropic's technology.
