Gumloop Secures $50M from Benchmark to Empower Employees as AI Builders

Gumloop Raises $50 Million Series B Led by Benchmark

Founded in mid-2023 by Max Brodeur-Urbas, Gumloop's initial mission was to enable non-technical employees to automate repetitive tasks using artificial intelligence. At the time, AI agents were largely experimental and often unreliable. However, as AI technology has advanced, so has Gumloop's platform.

The company now claims that organizations including Shopify, Ramp, Gusto, Samsara, Instacart, and Opendoor are utilizing its AI agents to autonomously manage complex, multi-step tasks without requiring any engineering expertise. A key feature is the ability for employees to share their created agents, fostering a collaborative environment that accelerates internal automation. Brodeur-Urbas noted that employees become “addicted” to building agents, leading to a company-wide adoption of AI.

Benchmark general partner Everett Randle believes that empowering every employee with AI capabilities is crucial for successful AI adoption. He sees Gumloop's intuitive agent-builder as a tool that can unlock this potential. This conviction led Randle to lead a $50 million Series B investment in Gumloop, marking his first deal at Benchmark. The funding round also saw participation from Nexus VP, First Round Capital, Y Combinator, Box Group, The Cannon Project, and Shopify.

Although Gumloop was not actively seeking funding, the startup decided the current market conditions were right to significantly scale its operations. Partnering with Benchmark, a firm known for backing iconic companies like eBay, Uber, and Dropbox, was a straightforward decision for Brodeur-Urbas.

The surging demand from enterprise clients has prompted a shift in Gumloop's strategy. Brodeur-Urbas, who previously envisioned building a smaller, highly efficient company, is now focused on building a dedicated sales force and expanding the engineering team to meet market needs.

Competitive Landscape and Gumloop's Edge

Gumloop operates in a competitive space with established automation platforms like Zapier and n8n, as well as specialized agent builders such as Dust. Even major AI labs like Anthropic, with its Claude Co-Work tool, are entering the market, allowing users to create agents without coding.

However, Randle is confident in Gumloop's superior offering. He recounted an instance during his due diligence where a customer had provided employees with access to Gumloop and two competing tools. After six months, employees were actively using Gumloop daily or weekly, while the other tools remained largely unused. The primary reason for Gumloop's adoption, according to Randle, is its minimal learning curve, enabling users to create agents and workflow automations immediately.

Randle also highlighted Gumloop's model-agnostic approach as a key differentiator, assuring its relevance as AI models evolve. This flexibility allows businesses to choose the best-performing model for specific tasks at any given time. Furthermore, model independence is attractive from a cost perspective, as enterprises often have existing credits with multiple providers like OpenAI, Gemini, and Anthropic, and prefer to leverage these investments.

Randle sees immense potential in enterprise automation, considering it the largest category within enterprise AI. Gumloop’s ability to simplify and democratize AI agent creation positions it strongly within this massive market.
