Spotify Expands into Physical Book Sales
In a rather surprising move earlier this year, Spotify ventured into the realm of physical book sales. As of this week, this new feature is officially live in the United States and the United Kingdom, enabling users to purchase physical books directly through the Spotify application.
This initiative is a collaboration with Bookshop.org, an online platform committed to supporting independent bookstores. Within the app, users browsing audiobook pages will now discover a button labeled “Get a copy for your bookshelf.” This button redirects users to Bookshop’s website, which handles all aspects of pricing, inventory management, and shipping.
Currently, the ability to purchase physical books is exclusive to Android users. iOS users are expected to gain access next week.
This latest development cements Spotify’s position as a contender in the book retail space, signaling its ambition to become a comprehensive destination for book enthusiasts. This new offering also aligns with Spotify’s broader strategy to enhance profitability. To support this objective, the company has been adjusting subscription prices in the US and Europe. Recently, Spotify announced it had reached an impressive 751 million monthly active listeners.
Expanded Features and User Engagement
Beyond physical book sales, Spotify has rolled out several other updates, initially announced in February. This includes an expansion of its “Page Match” feature, which now supports over 30 additional languages, such as French, German, and Swedish. Page Match allows users to scan a page from a physical book or e-book using their smartphone camera. The tool then analyzes the content and guides users to the corresponding section within the audiobook.
Since the feature's launch for English language books in February, Spotify has reported that users who utilize Page Match stream an average of 55% more audiobook hours weekly compared to other listeners. Furthermore, a significant 62% of audiobook titles discovered through Page Match on Spotify are books that users had not previously streamed.
Additional enhancements include the official release of “Audiobook Recaps” on Android devices. This feature delivers concise audio summaries tailored to the listener’s current progress in the story, making it easier to resume listening.
Discovering New Books with Charts
The company also announced that “Audiobook Charts,” mirroring Spotify’s popular Music and Podcast Charts, is now available in Germany. This follows its earlier introduction in the US and UK. These charts assist users in finding their next literary favorite by highlighting popular and trending books on Spotify.
