Waymo Advances Robotaxi Testing in Nashville
Waymo, the autonomous vehicle division of Alphabet, has removed human safety drivers from its test fleet in Nashville. This significant step moves the company closer to launching its commercial robotaxi service in the city.
Having conducted extensive testing in Nashville for several months, Waymo plans to introduce its robotaxi service later this year. An initial partnership with Lyft will allow riders to book trips directly through the Waymo app. As the service grows, Waymo's self-driving vehicles will also become accessible via the Lyft application. Lyft will manage fleet operations, including vehicle maintenance, charging infrastructure, and depot management, through its subsidiary Flexdrive.
Waymo has been actively expanding its robotaxi operations. The company currently offers commercial services in major cities such as Atlanta, Austin, Los Angeles, Miami, the San Francisco Bay Area, and Phoenix. Additionally, driverless test fleets are operating in Dallas, Houston, San Antonio, and Orlando.
