xAI Undergoes Major Rebuild, Aims to Catch Up in AI Race

xAI Reshapes Its Foundation Amidst Fierce Competition

The ambitious AI venture, xAI, initiated by Elon Musk, is undergoing a significant personnel and strategic overhaul, a move Musk attributes to a necessary rebuilding from the ground up. This restructuring comes as xAI aims to close the gap with established leaders like OpenAI and Anthropic. From the original eleven co-founders, only two remain as the company navigates this intense period of transformation.

"xAI was not built right first time around, so is being rebuilt from the foundations up," Musk stated on his platform X. The process, however, appears to be facing considerable challenges. The immediate pressure stems from the competitive landscape, particularly in the realm of AI coding tools. This week saw the departure of xAI co-founders Zihang Dai and Guodong Zhang, following Musk's concerns that the company's coding assistants were lagging behind rivals such as Anthropic's Claude Code and OpenAI's Codex. An all-hands meeting was reportedly held to address strategies for improvement, with Musk projecting a catch-up by mid-year.

Coding Tools as a Revenue Driver

The strategic importance of coding tools cannot be overstated, as they represent a significant potential revenue stream for AI laboratories. While xAI initially saw a surge in users attracted by Grok's permissive approach to generating certain types of content, the development of robust coding tools is viewed as critical for long-term business success. The current deficit in this area presents a tangible business problem, not just a perceived weakness.

Extensive Personnel Changes and Executive Oversight

The personnel overhaul extends beyond recent departures. Just last month, eleven senior engineers, including two co-founders, left xAI amidst a reorganization. Reports indicate that executives from SpaceX and Tesla have been brought in to assess and potentially streamline the workforce. The remaining co-founders, Manuel Kroiss and Ross Nordeen, alongside Musk, face the considerable task of steering the company forward.

Musk is actively seeking new talent, even reviewing rejected applications to identify promising candidates who may have been overlooked. "My apologies," Musk expressed on X, acknowledging potential missed opportunities in the hiring process.

In terms of workforce size, LinkedIn data suggests xAI has just over 5,000 employees, compared to OpenAI's more than 7,500 and Anthropic's over 4,700. On a positive note, the addition of Andrew Milich and Jason Ginsberg from the AI coding company Cursor signals continued interest in key talent. Their move to xAI may highlight the value placed on direct access to large language models (LLMs) and the computing resources required to run them, suggesting that xAI's core proprietary model remains an attractive asset.

Macrohard Project and Future Ambitions

The pressure on xAI is both internal and external. As a subsidiary of SpaceX, with plans for a SpaceX public offering, the cash-intensive xAI is under scrutiny to demonstrate tangible progress with Grok, its LLM. A faltering AI division could complicate investor relations.

Looking further ahead, Musk envisions xAI's Macrohard project as a key differentiator. This initiative, aimed at creating an AI agent capable of performing any task a white-collar worker can accomplish on a computer, is a joint effort with Tesla. Tesla is developing a complementary agent, "Digital Optimus," which would work in tandem with xAI's language model. This vision shares similarities with offerings from companies like Perplexity and the work being done by Peter Steinberger at OpenAI, indicating a growing trend toward AI agents that can orchestrate complex digital tasks.
