AI Data Center Startup Fluidstack Nears $1B Funding Round at $18B Valuation

Fluidstack's Rapid Ascent in AI Infrastructure

Fluidstack, a burgeoning startup specializing in data centers tailored for artificial intelligence workloads, is reportedly in advanced discussions to secure a $1 billion funding round. This potential investment would place the company's valuation at an impressive $18 billion, according to recent reports. Should this deal materialize, it signifies a dramatic escalation in Fluidstack's valuation, more than doubling its worth in just a few months.

A History of Rapid Growth

This development follows closely on the heels of reports from December, which indicated Fluidstack was seeking approximately $700 million at a $7.5 billion valuation. While that round was not formally announced as closed, sources at the time suggested it was slated to be led by Situational Awareness, a fund focused on artificial general intelligence founded by former OpenAI researcher Leopold Aschenbrenner. This earlier funding effort also reportedly garnered backing from notable figures like the Collison brothers of Stripe, former GitHub CEO Nat Friedman, and prominent AI investor Daniel Gross.

Further underscoring the interest in Fluidstack, discussions were reportedly ongoing in February with Google, which was considering a $100 million investment in the company.

The Anthropic Deal: A Game Changer

The significant hype surrounding Fluidstack is largely attributable to its substantial partnership with Anthropic. In November, Anthropic announced a $50 billion agreement with Fluidstack to construct custom-designed data centers in Texas and New York. Unlike traditional hyperscale cloud providers such as AWS, which cater to a wide array of computing needs, Fluidstack's infrastructure is specifically engineered to meet the demanding requirements of AI development and deployment.

This agreement represents a significant validation for Fluidstack, a company that was relatively less known in the U.S. prior to this collaboration. While Anthropic has traditionally relied on AWS and Google Cloud for its operations, the rapid growth of its AI model, Claude, necessitates expanding its compute capacity. This deal with Fluidstack grants Anthropic greater control over its own cloud infrastructure, mirroring strategies seen with rivals like OpenAI.

Strategic Relocation and Focus

The significance of the Anthropic partnership has prompted Fluidstack, which originated from Oxford and had been a notable player in Europe's AI landscape, to relocate its headquarters from the UK to New York. In a move to concentrate on U.S. market opportunities, the company also reportedly withdrew from a major €10 billion AI project in France last month.

Diverse Clientele and Future Outlook

Beyond Anthropic, Fluidstack's customer base includes other key players in the AI sector such as Meta, Poolside, and Black Forest Labs. Prior to its landmark deal with Anthropic, Fluidstack was perhaps most recognized for providing essential infrastructure to Mistral AI.

Fluidstack did not immediately respond to requests for comment on the latest funding discussions.
