Asus Challenges Elgato with New Secondary Touchscreen

The landscape of modern PC setups is shifting from single-display configurations to multi-functional command centers, and Asus is moving to capture the "sidekick" display market. The company recently announced the ROG Strix XG129C, a 12.3-inch touchscreen IPS display designed specifically to serve as a secondary companion to a primary gaming monitor. This move signals a direct challenge to specialized hardware like the Elgato Stream Deck and Corsair’s Xeneon Edge by offering a versatile, tactile interface for enthusiasts.

A Versatile Sidekick for Power Users

The XG129C draws its lineage from the innovative secondary displays found in Asus’s high-end laptops, such as the 2020 ROG Zephyrus Duo 15. At 12.3 inches, it is more compact than Corsair's 14.5-inch offering, yet it maintains a functional 720p resolution that is ideal for utility tasks. Despite its smaller footprint, Asus has not compromised on color accuracy, claiming the panel covers 125 percent of the sRGB color gamut and 90 percent of the DCI-P3 gamut.

For developers and hardware enthusiasts, the primary appeal lies in its gaming and monitoring capabilities. To sweeten the deal, Asus is including a one-year subscription to AIDA64 Extreme, a premium hardware monitoring tool valued at approximately $65. This allows users to transform the display into a dedicated real-time dashboard for system temperatures, clock speeds, and ai-technology workloads without sacrificing screen real estate on their main monitor.

+1

Beyond Hardware Monitoring

While it excels as a performance monitor, the XG129C is also being positioned as a creative hub for streamers and video editors. The touchscreen interface allows it to act as a digital productivity deck, housing shortcuts for broadcast software, timeline controls for editing suites, or even chat windows for live interactions. This flexibility makes it a compelling alternative for users who want the functionality of a Stream Deck but with the expansive visual feedback of a full monitor.

+1

Expanding the ROG OLED Family

Asus is not just focusing on the small scale. Alongside the XG129C, the company introduced the ROG Strix OLED XG34WCDMS, a 34-inch ultrawide powerhouse. This monitor features a Tandem QD-OLED panel, delivering a blistering 280Hz refresh rate and a 3440×1440p resolution. With 99 percent DCI-P3 color coverage, it is designed to provide the high-fidelity visual foundation that the smaller XG129C is meant to complement.

While official pricing for both units has yet to be revealed, these additions suggest that Asus is doubling down on a holistic ecosystem for the modern desk. Whether it is for deep system analytics or streamlined content creation, these new displays offer the modularity required for professional-grade development and play.
