Sarvam AI to Integrate Models into Everyday Devices
Indian AI company Sarvam is set to bring its recently unveiled AI models to a wide range of users by deploying them on feature phones, including Nokia devices, within cars, and on its own line of smart glasses. This strategic move, highlighted by Devignitor Insights, aims to democratize AI accessibility.
Supported by prominent investors like Lightspeed, PeakXV, and Khosla Ventures, Sarvam announced at the India AI Impact Summit in New Delhi that it is leveraging compact, "edge" models. These models are designed to consume minimal storage, requiring only megabytes, and are capable of running on most phones using their existing processors. Crucially, they are engineered to function offline, expanding their utility in diverse environments.
Partnerships for Enhanced Accessibility
Sarvam is collaborating with HMD to introduce a conversational AI assistant to Nokia and HMD phones. A demonstration showcased a user interacting with an AI assistant on a feature phone via a dedicated button. The assistant, operating in a local Indian language, provided guidance on government schemes and local market information. While impressive, it remains unclear if all AI features demonstrated will maintain offline functionality.
"Through edge AI, we want to bring intelligence to every phone, laptop, car, and even a new generation of devices," stated Tushar Goswamy, head of Edge AI at Sarvam, during his presentation.
The company has worked with Qualcomm to optimize its models for the chipmaker's chipsets. Sarvam has yet to specify the exact devices slated for these deployments. Furthermore, Sarvam is partnering with the engineering firm Bosch to integrate AI assistants into vehicles, although further details on this collaboration are limited.
Introducing Sarvam Kaze Smart Glasses
Sarvam also unveiled its in-house designed and manufactured AI smart glasses, named Sarvam Kaze. Pratyush Kumar, co-founder of Sarvam, described the glasses as a "builders' device" and announced their upcoming availability in May.
Previously, Sarvam primarily focused on the enterprise sector, offering voice-centric models for applications such as customer support. These new models and strategic partnerships signal a significant shift towards consumer-oriented applications for the company.
