MacBook Neo, Most Repairable in Years, Scores 6/10

MacBook Neo Praised for Repairability

Apple's latest MacBook Neo is making waves not just for its affordability, but also for its surprisingly improved repairability. According to a detailed teardown by the popular how-to website iFixit, the Neo stands out as the most repairable MacBook in roughly fourteen years.

Battery Design a Major Improvement

The standout feature highlighted by iFixit is the battery replacement process. Unlike previous MacBooks where batteries were often glued in place, the MacBook Neo utilizes a tray system secured by 18 screws. iFixit emphatically states, "screws still beat adhesive every time," and this change, which significantly simplifies battery replacement, elicited enthusiastic reactions within their office.

Other Repair-Friendly Features

Beyond the battery, several other design choices contribute to the Neo's enhanced repairability. These include a simpler disassembly process, the Repair Assistant software's apparent willingness to accept replacement parts, and easier-to-replace display and keyboard components.

Score Reflects Trade-offs

Despite these advancements, iFixit still noted areas for improvement, such as soldered RAM and storage, which limit upgrade potential. Consequently, the MacBook Neo received a repairability score of 6 out of 10. However, iFixit qualifies this by stating that for a MacBook, "that's a strong score.".
