Seamless Sharing Connects Threads to Instagram Stories
Threads, Meta's rapidly growing text-based platform, is further integrating with its sister app, Instagram, by introducing a new feature that allows users to share Threads posts directly to their Instagram Stories. This move aims to leverage Instagram's massive user base to drive more engagement and user acquisition for Threads. With over 400 million monthly users already, this enhancement seeks to boost that number even higher.
The newly launched functionality enables users to preview how a Threads post will appear on their Instagram Story without ever leaving the Threads application. This streamlined process simplifies the sharing experience, making it more intuitive for users to cross-promote content between the two platforms.
Previously, sharing a Threads post to an Instagram Story was similar to resharing a post from Instagram itself, requiring a few extra steps. While the app already offered options to share posts to an Instagram Feed or via Direct Messages, this new feature significantly reduces friction for Story sharing.
Since its launch in July 2023, Threads has benefited immensely from its close ties with Instagram. The initial sign-up process required users to authenticate with their Instagram credentials, which automatically populated their Threads profile with existing account details, including their username, bio, photo, verification status, and follower list. This integration allowed users to effortlessly follow accounts they already connected with on Instagram, and it notified users on Instagram when they were followed on Threads.
Meta has consistently utilized its established social media ecosystem to foster Threads' growth. This includes showcasing popular Threads content on Facebook and integrating a dedicated carousel of Threads posts within the Instagram user experience. Furthermore, the ability to easily cross-post from Instagram and Facebook to Threads has been a key driver of user adoption.
These strategic moves have yielded impressive results. Recent data indicates that Threads is now surpassing Elon Musk's X in terms of daily mobile usage, although X still holds a lead on the web. Threads' overall user numbers have seen substantial growth, doubling from 200 million monthly active users in August 2024 to 400 million monthly users as of August 2025. The platform also reported reaching 150 million daily active users in October.
