Peter Diamandis Launches $3.5M Sci-Fi Future Contest

Fostering a Hopeful Vision Through Science Fiction

For devoted fans of "Star Trek," the enduring appeal of the series lies in its optimistic portrayal of the future, where technology serves as a force for good. This vision has inspired Peter Diamandis, the renowned founder of XPrize, author, tech investor, and longevity advocate, to launch a new $3.5 million competition called the Future Vision XPrize. The goal is to encourage the creation of more such hopeful science fiction narratives for the screen.

Diamandis often credits his childhood fascination with "Star Trek" as a catalyst for his entire career. "'Star Trek' presented a hopeful outlook on the future, didn't it? It depicted humanity and technology working in harmony," Diamandis shared. "I genuinely believe it's the reason for everything I've accomplished since, as it motivated me to actively work towards creating and manifesting that future."

Shifting the Sci-Fi Narrative from Dystopia to Optimism

He observes that much of contemporary science fiction cinema and television leans heavily towards dystopian themes. "Every science fiction movie I encountered depicted a bleak future, where everything was going wrong, often as a result of technology. We see killer robots, dystopian AIs, echoing shows like 'Black Mirror' or films like 'Terminator' and 'Ex Machina,'" he stated. "Who would aspire to live in such a world?"

Motivated by this concern, Diamandis reached out to influential figures including Rod Roddenberry, son of "Star Trek" creator Gene Roddenberry, Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff, investor Cathie Wood, and contacts at Google. All agreed to sponsor the new Future Vision XPrize. This initiative aims to inspire filmmakers to tell stories that highlight the positive potential of technological advancement in the future. Diamandis believes that visualizing such possibilities can help bring them into reality.

Amidst growing uncertainty about jobs and the rapid pace of change, it's challenging for people to envision their futures, especially when bombarded with negative outlooks. However, Diamandis points out that today, it has never been easier for individuals with an idea to pursue it, particularly at the intersection of AI and longevity. "The most powerful tools available on the planet are free and accessible to everyone," he remarked, referring to widely available consumer AI models. "It's truly remarkable how we've democratized and reduced the cost of problem-solving capabilities."

The Role of AI and Human Creativity

In the field of longevity, for instance, AI is instrumental in understanding the complex processes within human cells. Diamandis, who co-founded Fountain Life, a health tech company focused on longevity, wants to see more of this forward-thinking future represented in media.

While encouraging contestants to leverage AI tools, Diamandis cautions against submitting entirely AI-generated content. "I don't want a script or a film generated solely by AI, devoid of human input," he advised. "The human element is absolutely crucial."

The Future Vision XPrize is being executed in collaboration with the 100 ZEROS initiative, a partnership between Google and Range Media Partners designed to support filmmakers in creating tech-inspired narratives using Google's tools, such as its video generation model Veo and video creation tool Flow.

Contest Details and Prizes

Submissions are open from March 9th to August 15th, with winners announced on September 25th. Each participant will submit a three-minute trailer. Diamandis anticipates these trailers will flood YouTube, allowing for public viewing and feedback. A panel led by Range Media will select a shortlist of submissions that will receive funding to produce a 10-minute short film.

The grand prize winner will receive $2.5 million in production funding towards a feature film and a $100,000 cash prize. The winning project will also be featured on the crowdsourcing platform Republic Film, aiming to raise an additional $5 million to $10 million for its production budget.

Diamandis mentioned that members of his Abundance community of CEOs have also contributed significantly to the prize money. Fifteen of them collectively provided nearly half of the total amount. Notable donors also include Ben Horowitz of Andreessen Horowitz, Ripple co-founder Jed McCaleb, and actor/producer Seth Green.

Diamandis hopes this contest will become a recurring event, transforming anxieties about the future into what he terms an "exponential mindset." This involves fostering a sense of agency, where individuals feel empowered by the future rather than overwhelmed by it. Stay Tuned to Devignitor Insights for More Updates
