Uber Eats Launches AI Assistant for Grocery Cart Creation
Uber Eats has unveiled a new artificial intelligence feature called "Cart Assistant," designed to streamline the grocery shopping process for its users. This beta version, now available within the app, aims to help customers fill their virtual carts more quickly and effortlessly.
To utilize the Cart Assistant, users simply need to search for a grocery store on the Uber Eats app. Once on the store's page, they can tap the distinctive purple Cart Assistant icon to begin their shopping journey. The tool is versatile, allowing customers to either type in a grocery list or upload an image of one. This includes the ability to use photos of handwritten lists or even screenshots of recipes, with Cart Assistant automatically identifying and adding the necessary ingredients to the user's basket.
Following the initial addition of items, users have the flexibility to customize their cart. They can swap out suggested items for their preferred brands or add additional products available from the store.
Uber Eats emphasizes that Cart Assistant leverages past order history to personalize the shopping experience. It prioritizes familiar items, such as a user's regular milk choice or favorite oatmeal, making subsequent shopping trips more efficient and tailored to individual preferences.
"Users were telling us they wanted a quicker way to shop, and we know how precious your time is," stated Praveen Neppalli Naga, Uber's CTO. "Cart Assistant helps you get from idea to checkout in seconds."
This new feature positions Uber Eats to more effectively compete in the rapidly evolving landscape of food delivery and grocery apps, many of which are already integrating or developing similar AI-powered chatbot functionalities. For instance, Instacart introduced its own AI search tool, powered by OpenAI's ChatGPT, in 2023 to enhance customer efficiency and provide personalized shopping recommendations. Similarly, DoorDash was reportedly experimenting with an AI chatbot named DashAI during the same year.
Last year also saw both Uber Eats and its competitor DoorDash integrate with ChatGPT to simplify the food ordering process. The Uber Eats integration allows U.S. users to explore local restaurants and menus directly within ChatGPT, with the option to finalize their purchases in the Uber Eats app. DoorDash's collaboration enabled users to request meal plans and automatically add all required ingredients to their DoorDash cart.
Reports from Bloomberg in 2023 indicated that Uber Eats was working on an AI-powered chatbot intended to assist users by inquiring about their budget and food preferences before helping them place an order.
Uber Eats is demonstrating a significant commitment to investing in artificial intelligence across its services. This includes the development of tools aimed at merchants, such as AI-generated menu descriptions, enhanced food photography, and automated customer review summaries.
