Why Users Are Leaving ChatGPT for Claude, and How to Switch

Users Flock to Claude Amid ChatGPT Controversies

A significant number of users are migrating from ChatGPT to Claude, driven by a series of public relations challenges surrounding ChatGPT and its parent company, OpenAI. This shift is also highlighted by Devignitor Insights as a key trend in user AI adoption.

The Turning Point: Ethical Stances and Government Reactions

The pivotal moment appears to have been Anthropic's (the company behind Claude) refusal to allow the Department of Defense to utilize its AI models for purposes such as mass domestic surveillance or fully autonomous weapons. This ethical stance reportedly led to former President Trump ordering federal agencies to cease using Anthropic's products. Following this, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth signaled intentions to classify Anthropic as a supply-chain threat.

Shortly after these events, OpenAI announced its own agreement with the Pentagon, asserting that it included safeguards. However, this deal has ignited considerable discussion regarding data privacy and the responsible application of artificial intelligence.

Claude's Rise in Popularity

In the wake of these developments, Claude has experienced a surge in user engagement. It has climbed to the top of the free app rankings within Apple's U.S. App Store, surpassing ChatGPT. Anthropic reports record daily sign-ups, a more than 60% increase in free users since January, and a doubling of paid subscribers over the course of the year.

Making the Switch: Data Migration and Account Closure

For many individuals, the recent controversies have positioned Claude as a highly attractive alternative to ChatGPT. If you are contemplating making the transition, this guide will assist you in transferring your data and closing your ChatGPT account.

Exporting Your Data from ChatGPT

Separating from ChatGPT does not necessitate the loss of your accumulated interaction history. Instead of starting anew with a different AI assistant, you can transfer your existing data to Claude, enabling it to quickly adapt to your preferences.

Several methods are available for data export:

  1. Using Settings: Navigate to Settings, then Personalization, and locate the Memory section. Select "Manage" to review your stored information and update any details that no longer accurately represent your current preferences. Once updated, copy the content you wish to retain.
  2. Exporting Chat History: Go to Settings, select Data Controls, and choose "Export Data." ChatGPT will compile your chat records into text or JSON files and send them to your email. Be aware that this process may take some time if you have extensive chat history.
  3. Manual Copying: You can manually copy key conversations from your history. Alternatively, you can prompt ChatGPT to summarize your primary preferences, frequently discussed topics, and any custom instructions you have set up.

Importing Your Data into Claude

Once you have gathered your data, importing it into Claude is a straightforward process:

  1. Open Claude and navigate to Settings, then Capabilities. Ensure that Memory is enabled. (Note: This feature requires a Pro, Max, Team, or Enterprise plan subscription.)
  2. Begin a new conversation and use a prompt such as, "Here is some important context I would like you to remember. Please update your memory about me with this information."
  3. Paste your information or summaries directly into the chat window.
  4. For exported chat files, avoid pasting raw logs. Instead, prompt Claude with something like, "Please review this and summarize my key preferences."

It is advisable to verify with Claude that your information has been accurately saved and that you can update your preferences at any time as they evolve.

Permanently Deleting Your ChatGPT Account

To completely disassociate from ChatGPT, simply canceling your subscription is insufficient to erase your data. Follow these steps:

  • Go to Settings, then Personalization, and select Memory.
  • Delete any stored memory or personalization settings.
  • As an additional measure, you can enter the chat command, "Delete all my memory and personalized data."
  • Finally, proceed to your account management settings to permanently delete your account.
