MatX Raises $500 Million Series B to Revolutionize AI Chip Performance
MatX, an ambitious AI chip startup founded by former Google hardware engineers, has announced a significant $500 million Series B funding round. The round was co-led by Jane Street and Situational Awareness, an investment fund notably backed by Leopold Aschenbrenner, a former researcher at OpenAI. This substantial investment underscores the growing interest in innovative solutions to power the next generation of artificial intelligence.
The core mission of MatX is to develop processors that significantly outperform Nvidia's current GPUs. Specifically, the company aims to achieve a tenfold improvement in both training large language models (LLMs) and delivering inference results. This aggressive target positions MatX as a serious contender in the highly competitive AI hardware market.
Further bolstering confidence in MatX's vision, the funding round saw participation from a distinguished list of investors. These include Marvell Technology, NFDG, Spark Capital, and Stripe co-founders Patrick Collison and John Collison. The announcement was made by Reiner Pope, founder and CEO of MatX, via a LinkedIn post.
While MatX has not disclosed its current valuation, industry observers point to its closest competitor, Etched, which recently raised $500 million at a $5 billion valuation, according to a report last month. This comparison suggests MatX may be valued significantly higher than its previous $300 million valuation following its Series A round.
The company's journey began in 2023, with CEO Reiner Pope bringing extensive experience from leading AI software development for Google's Tensor Processing Units (TPUs). His co-founder, Mike Gunter, was instrumental in the hardware design of these same TPUs before embarking on the MatX venture.
This new capital injection is earmarked for the production of MatX's chips through TSMC, a leading semiconductor manufacturer. The company plans to commence shipments of its advanced processors in 2027, marking a crucial step towards realizing its ambitious performance goals. The insights and progress from companies like MatX are vital for understanding the future trajectory of AI hardware, and we will continue to follow developments closely.
