ByteDance Delays Global AI Video Generator Launch Amid Legal Concerns

ByteDance Halts Global Rollout of AI Video Tool

ByteDance, the parent company of TikTok, has reportedly put a pause on its plans to globally launch its advanced AI video generation model, Seedance 2.0. This decision follows a period of significant scrutiny and legal challenges stemming from the model's initial release in China.

Hollywood Reacts to Seedance 2.0

Seedance 2.0, which became available in China in February, quickly gained notoriety for its ability to generate remarkably realistic short videos. A viral clip depicting a fictional fight scene between Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt, created by the AI, sparked intense criticism from Hollywood professionals and major studios. Many expressed concerns about the potential impact on creative industries, with one screenwriter lamenting, "It's likely over for us."

The controversy escalated as studios, including Disney, sent cease-and-desist letters to ByteDance. Disney's legal team specifically accused the company of "virtual smash-and-grab of Disney's IP," highlighting concerns over the unauthorized use of intellectual property. In response to these accusations, ByteDance had committed to implementing more robust safeguards to protect intellectual property rights.

Delayed International Expansion

Originally slated for a global release in mid-March, the international launch of Seedance 2.0 has now been postponed. The delay is attributed to ongoing efforts by ByteDance's engineering and legal teams to address the mounting legal issues and ensure compliance with intellectual property regulations before proceeding with the wider rollout. Further details on the revised launch timeline have not yet been disclosed.
