Google Integrates Gemini AI into Chrome for Wider Access
Google has announced a significant expansion of its Gemini integration for the Chrome browser, bringing the AI chatbot's capabilities to new regions including India, Canada, and New Zealand. This rollout allows users on desktop to interact with Gemini directly through a convenient sidebar, enabling them to ask questions about on-screen content, access information from Gmail, Google Keep, Drive, and YouTube, and even compare information across different browser tabs.
The expansion also introduces support for several Indian languages, with Gemini now available in Hindi, Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Telugu, and Tamil, in addition to English and other newly supported languages for Chrome.
Google initially introduced Gemini within Chrome in the United States last September via a floating window. Earlier this year, the company transitioned to a more integrated sidebar experience, which is now being extended globally.
Enhanced Functionality and Cross-Tab Capabilities
Users who receive this update will notice an "Ask Gemini" icon on their tab bar. Activating this feature allows users to ask questions about the content of any tab, request summaries, or even generate quizzes to test their understanding of a topic. A notable advancement is Gemini's ability to operate across multiple tabs simultaneously. This feature is particularly useful for tasks like comparing products while shopping or researching travel options, as users can reference information from several open tabs to get a consolidated answer.
Personalized Answers and Google App Integration
Gemini's integration extends to connecting with various Google applications to provide more personalized and contextual responses. By linking with Gmail, Google Maps, Google Calendar, YouTube, and other Google services, Gemini can offer tailored assistance. For example, users can leverage Gemini within the Chrome sidebar to directly compose and send emails without leaving their current browsing session. Similarly, Gemini can summarize YouTube videos, presenting key points along with timestamps for easy reference. It can also assist with scheduling meetings or providing daily briefings.
AI-Powered Image Transformation
Beyond text-based interactions, Google's Nano Banana 2 generative AI tool is accessible directly through Gemini for Chrome, offering image transformation capabilities. This feature allows users to upload images, such as a photograph of their room, and then use Gemini to visualize how a piece of furniture might look in that space, aiding in purchasing decisions.
Mobile Access and Future Rollouts
In addition to desktop access, Google is also rolling out Gemini support for Chrome on iOS devices in India. On mobile, users will find the option accessible through an icon in the address bar, providing page tools.
It is important to note that advanced agentic capabilities, which allow Gemini to perform tasks autonomously within the browser on behalf of the user, were initially launched for AI Pro and AI Ultra subscribers in the U.S. in January. Google is not including this particular functionality in the current expansion for users in India, New Zealand, and Canada.
