X Explores Innovative Ad Placement
X is currently experimenting with a novel advertising format designed to seamlessly integrate product recommendations directly below posts that mention a company or its offerings. This innovative approach, first observed by a user in Europe, presented a "Get Starlink" suggestion beneath a post praising the satellite service's performance in Portugal. Clicking this recommendation directs users to Starlink's official website.
Nikita Bier, X's head of product, confirmed the ongoing test, stating the company's objective is to "make an ad product that isn’t an ad." While not all users are currently seeing these ads, the placeholder where the advertisement would appear is visible across the platform.
For instance, a post from X user @levelsio, dated March 6, displays an outlined box below the text. This box typically shows a random X post, but in regions where the ad test is active, it features the targeted recommendation.
Users in the affected areas have noticed the new feature. One commenter humorously asked, "lmao, did you add this Starlink button?"
Addressing a user's suggestion about allowing affiliate links in this ad slot, Bier expressed a desire for authenticity, replying, "No, then people will lie. I want to trust recommendations on here."
Strategic Moves to Boost Creator Economy
This ad format test follows closely on the heels of X's rollout of "Paid Partnership" labels for creators. These labels aim to streamline compliance with advertising regulations, offering an alternative to using hashtags like "ad" or "paid partnership."
The integration of such embedded product links alongside these new creator partnership labels could significantly enhance X's appeal to marketers. This, in turn, could encourage greater creator engagement on the platform, positioning X more competitively against rivals like Instagram, YouTube, and TikTok, which are popular among content creators.
X has long pursued strategies to attract and retain creators, even prior to its rebranding and acquisition by Elon Musk. However, the platform has yet to fully establish its dominance in this arena. To date, X has introduced several creator-focused initiatives, including payouts for viral content, ad revenue sharing, and creator subscriptions.
Furthermore, X recently enhanced its Creator Subscriptions feature, introducing new capabilities such as the ability to monetize individual threads. The platform also announced that its integrated chatbot, Grok, can now process long-form content published as X Articles. This feature, however, remains underutilized, as many creators who produce extensive written content often prefer to publish on their own websites or through external newsletters.
