OSHA Investigates Worker Fatality at Rivian Warehouse

OSHA Launches Investigation into Rivian Warehouse Fatality

The U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has initiated an investigation into the tragic death of a worker at a Rivian warehouse in Illinois earlier this week. The federal agency anticipates the probe could extend for up to six months.

The deceased has been identified by local authorities as 61-year-old Kevin Lancaster. Reports indicate he sustained fatal "blunt traumatic compressional injuries" after becoming pinned between a tractor-trailer and a loading dock. The incident occurred at a facility situated a few miles from Rivian's main manufacturing plant.

According to local news, Lancaster was trapped in this precarious position for approximately 20 minutes on Thursday before emergency services could reach him. Firefighters responded to a distress call at 1:40 p.m. local time. Sadly, Lancaster was pronounced deceased at a local medical center at 2:33 p.m. The Normal Police Department and the McLean County Coroner's Office are continuing their separate investigations into the circumstances surrounding Mr. Lancaster's death.

"Safety at our facilities is our top priority. Unfortunately yesterday afternoon, a contractor passed away after an incident at our warehouse," Rivian stated in an official comment. "Our sympathy and thoughts are with their family and friends. We are working with the Normal Police Department on its investigation."

Rivian's factory safety in Normal, Illinois, previously drew scrutiny in 2024 following a report detailing 16 "serious" violations issued to the company over the preceding two years. However, automotive factories are generally recognized as high-risk environments. Since that report, Rivian has incurred only one additional violation at its Illinois manufacturing plant. At the time of the earlier report, OSHA had acknowledged improvements in Rivian's safety and health team, noting their cooperation with the agency's processes.

The expansive Normal facility, covering 4.3 million square feet, is responsible for assembling Rivian's R1 pickup truck, R1 SUV, and the commercial electric delivery van (EDV). The company is currently undertaking an expansion of the plant by an additional 1.1 million square feet to accommodate the production of its upcoming R2 model. Once completed, the factory is projected to have a manufacturing capacity of 215,000 vehicles annually.
