Particle App Integrates AI for Podcast News Clips
Particle, an innovative AI news application developed by former Twitter engineers, is expanding its reach to include insights from podcasts. This new feature, called Podcast Clips, aims to deliver the most compelling and relevant audio segments from various podcasts directly alongside related news articles in the user's feed. This development is particularly timely, aligning with the growing trend of consuming news through audio formats and the increasing use of podcasts for breaking news and official announcements.
With Podcast Clips, users no longer need to sift through entire podcast episodes to find brief but impactful commentary. Instead, they can access short, relevant clips directly within the Particle app, often synchronized with the news stories they are reading. For those who prefer to read, transcripts of the clips are available, with spoken words highlighted in real time.
"We have done that basically for any news story — if there is a podcast that is talking about it, or relevant at all, we have got all those clips," stated Particle CEO Sara Beykpour. "It's a really cool way, when you are reading a story or learning about a story, to get a breath of what are people saying about this? What is the commentary?"
This feature reflects a significant shift in the media landscape, where podcasts are increasingly recognized as credible news sources and platforms for major announcements. Tech leaders, for instance, are increasingly opting for podcasts to share their messages, bypassing traditional media outlets.
Particle employs embedding models, similar to those used by large language models, to identify connections between podcast content and specific news stories. These are not generative AI technologies but rather sophisticated tools for understanding semantic relationships. "We use vector embeddings to understand that these different parts of the podcasts are related to these different stories," Beykpour explained. "A single podcast might cover 10 or 20 stories, so we use AI to understand that. We also use AI to do some of the logic around clipping, and understanding when to start a clip and end a clip."
The app utilizes technology from ElevenLabs for audio transcription, while the precise logic for identifying clip boundaries remains a proprietary aspect of Particle's technology. This move into analyzing podcast commentary is also gaining traction in newsrooms, with publications like The New York Times experimenting with AI tools to transcribe and summarize podcasts for better understanding of public discourse.
Beyond news stories, Particle's Podcast Clips feature extends to individual entities. Users can explore a feed of all podcast appearances by notable figures, such as OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, allowing for a deeper dive into their public commentary.
Particle has also introduced monetization through Particle+, a subscription service offering premium features. These include personalized news summaries in preferred styles, custom voice options for audio playback, unlimited crossword puzzles, and enhanced AI chatbot interactions.
The recent Android release also enhanced the app's browsing experience with a dedicated tab for timely stories and improved entity pages that offer definitions, related content, and articles. The company notes a significant international user base, with over half of its weekly users located outside the U.S., particularly in India.
