Claude Climbs App Store Ranks Amidst Pentagon Scrutiny
Anthropic's AI chatbot, Claude, has experienced a significant surge in popularity, reaching the number two spot in the U.S. App Store's free apps category. This rise in visibility appears to be closely linked to recent discussions surrounding the company's complex negotiations with the Pentagon.
As of Saturday afternoon, Claude was ranked second, trailing only OpenAI's ChatGPT. Google's Gemini held the third position. Data from SensorTower indicates a dramatic improvement in Claude's standing. At the close of January, the app was not even within the top 100 free applications. Throughout most of February, it resided within the top 20, but has seen a rapid ascent in recent days, moving from sixth on Wednesday to fourth on Thursday, and finally to second place on Saturday.
The increased attention follows a dispute between Anthropic and the Department of Defense. Anthropic reportedly sought assurances that its AI models would not be utilized for widespread domestic surveillance or the development of fully autonomous weapons. In response, President Trump allegedly instructed federal agencies to cease using all Anthropic products, and Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth reportedly labeled the company a supply-chain threat.
This situation gained further traction when OpenAI announced its own agreement with the Pentagon. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman stated that this deal includes safeguards concerning domestic surveillance and autonomous weapons, drawing a parallel to the concerns raised by Anthropic.
