San Francisco Sees First Glimpse of Uber's Premium Robotaxi Service

Keep an eye out in San Francisco for sleek Lucid Gravity SUVs equipped with advanced sensor arrays and Nuro's self-driving technology. These vehicles are currently part of an internal testing phase, allowing select Uber employees to experience rides through the Uber app. This initiative marks a significant step towards a broader public launch planned for later this year.

Nuro, a leader in autonomous vehicle technology, announced this development, confirming that the vehicles operate in autonomous mode with a human safety operator present as a backup. This testing phase is crucial for refining the technology and user experience before a public rollout.

Partnership and Investment Drive Innovation

The collaboration between Uber and Nuro, solidified by a substantial partnership and investment announced in July 2025, is accelerating the development of this premium robotaxi service. Uber's significant investment in Lucid, including a commitment to purchase at least 20,000 Gravity SUVs over six years, underscores its dedication to this future of mobility. Nuro also received a significant multi-hundred-million dollar investment from Uber.

The Lucid Gravity robotaxi, unveiled in January, is engineered with cutting-edge technology. It features high-resolution cameras, solid-state lidar sensors, and radar systems that enable its self-driving capabilities, allowing it to perceive and navigate real-world environments effectively. The autonomous system is powered by Nvidia's Drive AGX Thor computer.

Operational Strategy and Testing Milestones

Uber plans to own and operate the premium robotaxi service, potentially with assistance from third-party partners. Regulatory filings from last year indicate that production of these specialized Lucid Gravity vehicles is slated to commence in late 2026.

Nuro has been diligently testing its autonomous Lucid Gravity SUVs. Following closed-course trials, the company initiated public road testing late last year. Currently, Nuro's engineering fleet comprises 100 Lucid Gravity SUVs outfitted with its autonomous driving system. These vehicles are instrumental in gathering real-world data and validating autonomous driving performance across various U.S. locations.

Evaluating Real-World Performance

According to Nuro, the employee test rides serve a critical purpose. They allow the team to assess the integrated performance of the autonomy stack, the vehicle itself, and the overall rider experience within a live operational setting. A key focus of this testing is evaluating the system's proficiency in handling passenger pick-ups and drop-offs, a notoriously complex aspect of autonomous ride-hailing operations.
